UNESCO Atlas of the world's languages in danger 2009, announced 196 endangered languages, . the unesco research adviser Jean Robert said "Efforts should be made to preserve languages and communities whose mother tongues are under threat of extinction should actively work for reviving them," said Jean Robert Opgenort, Hence it is very important to take this subject to discuss especially the high cultural identy south indian languages under one roof to discuss this important issue, iam really appreciating the association and the team members for the thought and Iam very thankful to kerala samaj for the opportunity to share my opinion with u all. what is the role of culture in the formation of identity via self-reflection and reflection of values? The fact that identity and language is usually connected, yet equally questioned, it appears to be necessary to reflect theoretically the extension of the medium 'language' into what has become today the 'media'. What then is the question of power in this context, and who is being controlled by this media power? In any reflection about 'cultural identity' the location and situation of the subject within that media setting has to be considered, and it means to include in one's reflections about identity this new definition of power. The question has to be extended to what dimensions are involved, language as my own personal expression' versus 'language as dissolvement of my personal self through language norms'? global man, global identity thats what the young generation now proudly talks about their identity? the media especially the tv media's role is very important nowadays on this cultural identity. In fact the regional languages identiy is slowly changed and every one wants to go behing america and the dollar dreams. our youngsters have only one dream, what is that? going to america, we parents too the culprit in certain extent for this. parents too proud about their kids in america. they only talks about the global identiy. but practically speaking there is no such identity exists. the false identity is created to sell their pro ducts in big markets like india. and our indian govt is also stands with them. there was one NDTV programme i have remembered. the discussion was due to hindi movies the marathi movies disappeared. its true. we in south india, all our TV channels, many programmes in our regional languages. but iam just asking you all Is there any cultural identity in our TV channels regional languages programme? many campaigners in our regional TV programmes, the most important qualification is NO NEED OF FLUENCY IN THE REGIONAL LANGUAGE. IMPORTANT IS Taminglish, malayalaminglish etc. there is another danger for regional language is mixed marriages. actually iam not against at all the mixed marriages and iam the follower of periyar EV Ramasamy nayackar and i accept the mixed marriage is the strong weapon against casteism. but the draw back of this in metro city like mumbai is the cultural identit crisis for the children of the mixed marriages. When two mothertongues meet, the result is a third language. In the bargain, both the regional languages are forgotten. Sociologists are calling it a linguistic cultural quandary, that may not be ideal for those keen on a sense of identity and rootedness. But there seems to be little room for mother-tongues in today's global village. Mixed marriages are breeding children who speak neither the mother-tongue of the dad or the local lingo of their mom's hometown. Language cannot be created by man. in 1887 they tried to create one universal language. the name of the language is ESPERANTO. nearly 10 million people have learned this language. but its failed because the artificial tongue does not reflect the true culture as existing languages do. man can write the computer language programme not the creation of any language. why one more question? what is the harm yaa to accept the english ? when we say we lost the identity the youngster don't agree. because they don't know about our rich cultural identification, they don't know our rich cultural life of our fore fathers they don't understand it is to be given back to their children through their bio memory , small exp. i don't like family structure of western countries. not because of the micro family divorce etc. i can proudly say that my family structure is totally different from western countries family. when the family structure is developed first in roman culture, the word family derived from the word familia and famulus. familia means numbers of slaves under one person, famulus means slaves at home . I felt this is not family . even before this roman family structure we the south indian sangam literature talks about family. the word for family is ILLARAM. IL means home , ARAM MEANS the value of life. the partners in ILLARAM have equal rights . they were called thalaivan, thalaivi hero heroine, not master and slave like roman culture. this is my identity. its in my bio memory. one more reason, i have one exp at europe. when i met my eelam srilanka family at switzerland my friend told his exp. the family got the citizenship in swiss. they lived long period. their children talk swiss language slowly they were adopting to western culture whether they like it or not. once when my friend was sick he reported to his manager, whom he reports everyday. the manager just asked his emp number he recognised him not through his name but thrg his NUMBER. he was shocked and he said we lost our identity. the country accepted my as her citizen but it will not give me any identity.. its not the story this is the experience of many who migrated with false hopes who lost their roots. hence its my request give our children not only food and clothes and education and assets give them our roots give them our rich cultural identity and pass on our proud values of life in our bio memory.
